Biography

An American tenor, a native of Louisiana. In 1991, he won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and was a member of the Metropolitan Opera's Young Artist Development Program. In 1992, he made his stage debut at the Metropolitan Opera as the Steersman in "The Flying Dutchman". A few years later, he began performing leading roles at the Met.

Paul Groves performs in major American theaters and actively tours abroad. In 1995, he made his La Scala debut as Tamino and later became the first American tenor invited to sing the role of Nemorino in "L'elisir d'amore" at La Scala. In 1996, he made his French debut as Tom Rakewell and debuted at the Opéra National de Paris as Fenton ("Falstaff"). He also made his Royal Opera House, Covent Garden debut as Tamino. He frequently performed at the Vienna State Opera. He is a regular participant at the Salzburg Festival, where he debuted in 1995. He has also sung at the Bavarian State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Dutch National Opera, Opéra de Lyon, among others. In 2009, he toured Japan for the first time, performing the title role in Stravinsky's "Oedipus Rex". In 2016, he performed the role of Alessandro Severo in the rarely staged opera "Eliogabalo" by Francesco Cavalli at the Palais Garnier, home of the Opéra National de Paris. In 2018, he sang the title role in another musical rarity, Erich Korngold's "Der Ring des Polykrates", at the Dallas Opera.

An active concert singer, he performs works by Mahler, Britten, Bruckner, Haydn, Beethoven, Berlioz, and other composers.
